This time of the year, the IRS fields countless calls from taxpayers and CPAs who have questions about tax filing. But all too often, they are flooded with another kind of call as well. These calls come from scammers whose sole aim is to defraud the IRS and potentially steal some valuable identifying information in the process.

In response to this threat, the IRS will now be validating the identity of all callers in new ways. Callers are asked to have the following information ready upon calling:

  • Social security numbers and birth dates for anyone named on the tax return
  • A tax ID number if the taxpayer has one in lieu of a SSN
  • Filing status
  • A copy of the prior year’s tax return
  • Any IRL letters or notices received by the taxpayer
