Financial news and advice columns are riddled with statistics of all shapes and sizes. But sometimes it can be difficult to understand what those large, complex sets of numbers actually mean for people like you and me. A few years ago, the Social Security Administration tried to simplify things to show us just how dire the situation was for American workers.

They said that if you take a random sample of 100 people at the start of their careers, on average only 5 will be financially secure by the time they reach retirement age.
