Many Americans at one point or another will go into debt. It’s a slippery slope and some are unable to dig themselves out of debt quickly enough to avoid the eventual harassing calls from debt collectors. In fact, as many as one third of all consumers have received one of these calls in the last twelve months.

While most debt collection efforts are entirely legal, if a little annoying, there are some cases where collectors take advantage of people who do not know their rights. They are not allowed to threaten you. They are not allowed to call at all hours of the morning and night unless you give them permission. And they are not allowed to lie to you about what you owe. If they do, you have a right, and a duty, to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
