While college costs are still rising at universities around the country, Sallie Mae’s annual “How America Pays for College” report suggests that more and more families are saving by choosing less expensive schools. For the first time in many years, the average college-related costs per student went down for the 2012-13 school year. Focusing on price has become a reality for many students and parents in the research and application process, with about 40 percent of students eliminating a school from consideration based on price before even researching the institution.
